The Challenge: Navigating the “Long Cycle” of Luxury Retail
In the e-commerce furniture industry, customer behavior is unique. Unlike grocery or fashion retail, customers do not buy sofas or dining tables every month.
When we initially partnered with our client to develop a Churn Prediction Model, we discovered a startling reality: 99% of the customer base appeared to be “churning.” In a low-frequency industry, traditional churn metrics are often misleading because a customer might stay “dormant” for two years before making another major purchase.
Recognizing that predicting “exit” was providing little value, we pivoted our strategy to focus on Propensity to Buy—identifying the exact moment a dormant customer enters their next purchasing window.
The Solution: A Multi-Layered Data Strategy
We implemented a four-pillar AI strategy to transform their two-year historical data into a predictive engine.
1. The Propensity to Buy Model (The Pivot)
Instead of focusing on who was leaving, we built a model to predict which customers are most likely to purchase again after 6 months. The Value: This allowed the marketing team to stop wasting budget on the 99% who weren’t ready and focus exclusively on the high-probability “Gold” segment.
- The Result: Highly targeted incentives sent to the right people at the right time, drastically increasing conversion rates.
2. Intelligent Category Segmentation
We performed a deep dive into product performance to categorize the inventory into Top-Performing and Non-Performing segments.
- This visibility allowed the client to understand which furniture lines were “anchors” for the brand and which were underutilized assets.
3. Marketing Mix Modeling (MMM)
For the non-performing categories, we implemented Marketing Mix Modeling. We analyzed how different marketing channels (social media, email, search ads) impacted these specific lagging categories.
- This provided a data-backed roadmap on how to reallocate spend to breathe life into stagnant inventory.
Fit for the Enterprise
This case study highlights how EigenAI handles the complexities of Enterprise Data Science:
- Context-Aware AI: We don’t apply “one-size-fits-all” models. We adapted our approach when the industry reality (low-frequency furniture buying) contradicted standard churn logic.
- Actionable Outputs: We provided the marketing team with a specific, “ready-to-act” list of customers, rather than just a theoretical data report.
- Optimization of Non-Performers: We didn’t just identify what was failing; we used MMM to provide the solution for how to fix it.
The Outcome: Precision Marketing
By shifting the focus from Churn to Propensity, our client achieved:
- Higher ROI on Marketing Spend: Budget was moved away from unlikely buyers and toward high-propensity leads.
- Inventory Clarity: A clear understanding of category performance allowed for better stock management and promotional planning.
- Predictive Agility: The company can now forecast demand six months into the future based on individual customer purchase windows.
